SHEET COPPER RESTORATION

 "Miss Freedom Statue"

Georgia State Capital Building, Atlanta Georgia

On the morning of July 17th 2004, the Georgia State Capital Building was evacuated, to enable the air-lift removal of this National Monument . Measuring 25-feet high, the statue has been on its perch for 115 years is now part of a multi-year restoration program for the Georgia State Capital Building. Heather and little were contracted to perform the removal, extensive restoration and responsibility of returning her safely home once the restoration is completed

After several days of preparation Miss Freedom was ready for the air-lift.

On the 17th of August 2004 the "Lady" left her perch, and was safely landed

in a nearby parking lot not far from the Capital Building

THE RESTORATION PROCESS

Preparation begins with the removal of existing paint finishes

to assess the condition and areas requiring restoration

Existing support armature and steel support              Once paint removal took place, numerous pinholes

bands showing signs of advanced deterioration          were found, requiring re-soldering and refinishing

A new armature was incorporated, made of a  9-inch by 1/2-inch thick galvanized steel pipe

and a replacement section being form-fitted to  the deteriorated areas of metal

Beginning to re-assemble restored and replaced sections on new armature

Sections are re-positioned and attached on the armature, areas are

then re-finishing and prepared for new paint system

Stage one of three, primer coats are applied to prepare the exterior for the final stages of painting.

Next, the statue receives three base coats of new paint, applied directly over the primer finish

Final finishes are completed with the application of a clear coat epoxy lacquer over the entire surface

Above, the final stage of the project, with a safe and successful airlift of Miss Freedom

to her home atop the Capital Building overlooking her Georgia State

Copper Statue Restoration

A portion of this Centennial Restoration project involved the restoration of three of the existing statues.

With numerous missing components, dies were cast from portions of each statue and combined for the replacement parts on the other three "Ladies".

One of the four original statues had fallen from its perch several times over the 100 years, and had to be completely replicated.

Each statue consisted of 56 separate parts, and completed stand 12 feet high in their positions on the four gable peaks of the Courthouse
